Tyrese Gibson is refusing to come back for Fast & Furious 9 if Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson appears in the film. This is the latest escalation in the actor’s war of words with his co-star. The first sign of trouble between the two happened when Tyrese took to social media to publicly plea with The Rock not to star in a spin-off featuring his character Hobbs. Nonetheless, a Hobbs solo movie was announced shortly after, and Fast & Furious 9 was then pushed back to 2020.
Since then, Tyrese has called out The Rock on several occasions, calling the actor “selfish” for his actions. Tyrese also claims to have previously turned down a spin-off adventure featuring his character Roman and Tej, played by Lucadris. Despite Vin Diesel coming out and stating the delay of the next chapter is nobody’s fault, Tyrese’s anger over the situation shows no sign of cooling down yet.
The actor has now taken to his Instagram account to declare that if The Rock appears in Fast & Furious 9, then he won’t. Gibson’s Roman Pierce is a popular character within the franchise, often serving as comic relief. Despite his obvious passion for the series, Gibson feels so strongly about The Rock situation that he’s willing to leave. You can read his full comment below:
While a Hobbs solo movie has been rumored ever since the character debuted in Fast Five, talk heated up following this year’s The Fate of the Furious. The Rock shared such good chemistry with co-star Jason Statham that a post-credit scene was filmed that hinted at the two characters teaming up for another adventure. The scene was removed from Fate of the Furious – apparently at the behest of star/producer Vin Diesel – but it’s been confirmed this new movie will focus on Hobbs and Statham’s Deckard.
Diesel and The Rock seemingly had a rough experience working together on Fast 8 too, with the latter calling out his co-star for his behavior onset. For his part, Diesel seems to be trying to reassure fans the series is in good hands. He recently released a video that all but confirmed director Justin Lin and Jordana Brewster will be returning for the next two entries.
Hopefully, the situation between Tyrese and The Rock will calm down between now and 2020. Fans would love to see both characters returning for Fast & Furious 9 – rather than see this public spat escalate even further.
