For seven straight years since 2011, we have being treated to the spectacule which is Game of Thrones. Every weekend whenever a new season is on the world anticipates and looks forward to the memories that lay wait for us every Sunday evening.
From great triumphs, to moments of love, victories, battles, births and even death. But with a story as compelling as that of Game of Thrones there are bound to be characters we love and hold dear to our hearts and those we equal utterly hate.
But as we all know this world has never been fair to anyone so there were times we had to bid good bye to some of our favorite characters, some were not under befitting circumstances, others we hated to see killed but were glad when they died, others we wish were still alive in the fantasy world today.
These are the top ten most painful deaths of Game of Thrones;
10: Petyr Baelish

Petyr Baelish also known as Lord Baelish was introduced to us as a member of the small council for King Robert and King Joefry, where he served as the master of coin. Admitted, Baelish was a love-able hated character, he was cunningly devilish but utterly smart, he was instrumental in orchestrating the first major betrayal of the series when he coincided with the Lannister’s to betrayal Ned Stark but don’t let us forget if it weren’t for him Sansa Stark will probably have been caught, jailed and tried maybe even killed.
Lord Baelish died at the hands of Arya Stark at Winterfell at the orders of Sansa Stark in Season Seven, fine his death came at the point when he was trying to cause a discord amidst the two sisters but we can’t help to leave unnoticed the part in which Baelish played in the overall development of the series.
As much as we loved to see Baelish die we all know if he were still alive he probably would have been able to play a major role in the upcoming battle of the battles. Hate or love Lord Baelish, he’s absence will certainly be missed.
9: Myrcella Baratheon:
It’s very difficult to feel any love for the daughter of a character like Cersei but like we have been thought through the progression of the series, it is not right to judge the child by the sins of the parent.
Myrcella was the second child and only daughter of Jamie and Cersei Lannister, a young and sweet innocent girl who had just fallen into sweet young love. Myrcella found herself at the center of a battle between her mother and a Lady of Dorne, killed by poison on her way back to her father’s land.
We can’t just help but feel for a girl like Myrcella who knew nothing but was caught amidst the thorns of the Game of Thrones.
8: The Sept of Baelor

Season Six finale’s opening sequence is probably one of the best in the series. I can’t start to explain the awesomeness of the series of events that happened within the first fifteen minutes of the episode. A sequence that went on for long without the utter of any words carried on along with the facial expression, body movements of each of the main characters and a sound track that was self explanatory.
The events that occurred at feast of the mothers at the Sept of Baelor is not one that cannot be overlooked, besides the faith militants who a lot of people argue for and against, there was Margaery, a wise and love-able character who had also been caught up in the battle of families between House Lannister and House Tyrrell, besides her where the other lots of innocent victims who lost their lives in that Sept.
Maybe the death could have been avoided but the Game of Thrones is what it will always be, there will always be somebody outsmarting the other.
7: Tywin Lannister

Tywin Lannister, the richest, most feared and hated man in Westors by every House that was not a Lannister. We couldn’t help but hate Tywin Lannister, I mean who loats his own son because he is a dwarf and “innocently killed’ is mother at birth?
That was the kind of character Tywin was, he was going to kill his own son under false allegations which he knew of (though he had cut a pact with his oldest child, Jamie to have Tyrion banished and sent to the wall later on) even though Tywin’s death could not have been any sweeter, dying at the hand of the most deserving man Tyrion we can’t help but miss that aura and power that came with the Tywin character, he was a force to reckon with, his power, intelligence and respect he commanded (even if not deserved) was one that played a huge part in the development of Game of Thrones and he certainly has been missed.
6: Tommen Baratheon
Like his sister, probably the only two lovable characters among all three children of Cersei Lannister. Tommen was Cersei second son and last child. He was bestowed with the responsibility of being a king at an early age in his life after he’s elder brother Joefry was poisoned.
Tommen tho a mummy’s boy wasn’t as ruthless as his elder brother and you could not help but appreciate the innocent love he had and enjoyed with his queen, Margaery even if he was been played.
Tommen was seen jumping out of the window in Season Six Episode Ten of the series after he had just witnessed from Kings landing the destruction of the Sept of Baelor which at that moment housed his beloved wife Margaery, her brother and hundreds of other innocent citizens.
Tommens’s situation was not only understandable but pitiable as well, he was a child who had lost his supposedly father, brother and sister within a short period of time and here he sat helplessly as the king as he watched he beloved wife murdered from the distance, he must have been fed up with all that was going on and concluded that dying was a very better option to living at that moment.
5: Khal Drogo
Khal Drogo wasn’t always a nice character, he’s introduction in Season 1 wasn’t all that glamorous. He came off as a mean, heartless man who raped and only used his wife Khaleesi for his pleasures but when she started building trust and rapport with the Drogo king we started to see a vulnerable man who loves his wife dearly underneath the character.
What made Khal death more painful was the way in which he died and sacrifice khaleesi had to pay to see him brought back to live. Khal was fatally injured in a fight with one of his subordinates who had confronted and challenged his wife’s legitimacy. He later sub-corned to the injury and died, then Khaleesi sacrificed her unborn son during a ritual in other to bring Khal Drogo back to live.
But after the ritual, Khal Drogo was better dead than alive and was had to be be burnt giving birth to the rise of the dragon queen Khaleesi.
4: The Red Wedding
The Red Wedding that took place under the House of Walden Frey will probably hold the record for the scene in which a lot of our favorite characters lost their lives. Four of the Starks were killed in one night, Catlyne Stark, her daughter in law and unborn grandchild, Robb Stark and many of his bannermen we killed at the red wedding.
Alot of people have blamed the occurrence of the Red Wedding on the descions of Robb Stark, I agree Robb was not the wisest man in Westros but he’s mother didn’t deserve to die that way neither did he’s wife deserve it nor does any many deserve to see his unborn child being butchered from the womb of his wife moments before he his been killed.
We couldn’t help but mourn the loss of some great characters that evening.
3: Rickon Stark
We have seen a lot of gruesome deaths in the series to be affected by just another dying by arrow but Rickon Stark wasn’t one like that. It was the story of another innocent sweet boy, this time a Stark, who was caught amidst the Game of Thrones.
Rickon Stark was killed in Season Six Episode Ten at the battle of the bastards during a sickening game by probably the second most hated character of the series Ramsay Bolton. What added to the scenery of this scene was the helplessness of all involved, Rickon could do nothing but run for his life, Jon Snow who probably knew he couldn’t save his brother the moment he mounted his horse was treated to watching his youngest brother killed only seconds before he could have saved him.
Ramsay Bolton had being dispised by many before that episode but the hatred for him skyrocketed after that scene.
2: Shireen Baratheon
Shireen was the daughter and only living child of Stannis Baratheon a sweet, innocent and young girl, so full of life, brilliant and accommodating. She was a character who was caught admit the many unnecessary sacrifices performed on the show.
Little did she know she was going to be offered up at a ritual the night before her death when she was tell her father she was ready to do whatever she could to help him.
Shireen was arrested, tied to a stake and burnt alive as Stannis soldiers looked on. Her screams and pleas for help and mercy moments before her death were heartbreaking and unbearable even the strongest of us couldn’t help but flinch a the scene played out.
What was even more annoying was the little or no effect her sacrifice had in securing the iron Throne for Stannis.
1: Eddard Stark
Eddard Stark also known as Ned Stark like he was always referred to was the most honorable man in the whole of Westoros. A lot of the Game of Thrones story centered around him and the grounds he laid down in the first season of the spectacle. He let the secret out that the dead King Robert had no legitimate child therefore initiating the battle of the five kings.
We are all used to having pitch perfect characters running around in our television screen but the producers of game of thrones made it clear to us early on that being a man of honor does not safeguard you from injustice.
Ned Stark was beheaded by Ser Llyn Payne in Season 1 Episode 10 at the order of the king King Joefry. Ned Stark was ordered to be killed after he had proclaimed Joefry the legitimate heir to the iron throne after an evening session with Lord Varys. What made this death more painful was the fact that the murder was done in front of the entire population of Kings Landing and witnessed by the two daughters of Ned Stark and they couldn’t do a single thing about it.
This was the first and probably most heartbreaking moment and death. Of the entire Game Of Thrones series, one that set a lot of other subsequent chain of event in motion. A lot of things would have played out differently if only Ned stark, Lord of Winterfell was still alive and breathing today, he might be dead and gone but will never be forgotten.
A lot of painful deaths and moments probably still awaits us as well patiently (maybe not patiently) await the finale of this series as numerous lovable characters who are at the verge of dying are still alive. We can only hope for the best and expect the worst as the battle of the seven kingdoms and that of the night walkers approach on and upon us.
Let me know the deaths you consider most painful and heartbreaking below in the comments section.
